My name is Juanita Abarca and I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I am one of the few native San Diegans around. I began my elementary education at Central Elementary school in Southeast San Diego. In the fourth grade, my mother decided to switch things up. So my sister’s and I began attending Juarez Elementary School in Serra Mesa. That’s where my 6th grade graduation took place. When I think of that day, I distinctly remember my mother sobbing in the front row as we (my sister Bertha and I) walked up for our diplomas. This was a little embarrassing. But it didn't end there...the sobbing continued at our Jr. High graduation from Taft Jr. High, and again at our high school graduation from Kearny High School, in Linda Vista. I received my B.A. from San Diego State University. I double majored in Spanish and Chicano Studies. The day of my college graduation, while standing at the (then) Cox Arena floor, I took out my cell phone and called my mom. I knew she was in the stands. I managed to reach her, but again the sobbing continued and this time from the both of us. I finally realized that her tears were merely her way of expressing joy and a sense of accomplishment. At least, that's what my tears meant.
My experience with technology has very much increased during these last few years. Although, I would not dare call myself a tech guru. Back in 1994 (my first year of college), I remember using a typewriter for my school work. Sounds crazy, I know! I think my generation was the last to use them. I used to hate it when I ran out of correction tape. It took FOREVER to type something up. This of course, was way before “spell check”. I’m not saying that computers weren’t around… they just weren’t as easily accessible as they are now, nor as advanced. Fast forward 17 years from that first semester in college and now I have internet access on my cell phone. I can check and update my Facebook status, take pictures and video, text, listen to music, play games, use a calculator and oh yeah, even make phone calls. I love technology. I’m just afraid I’m not advancing as fast as it.
Presently, I am a matriculated student at Cal State University, San Marcos. I am currently enrolled and plan on successfully completing the pre-requisites set forth by the College of Education for the Teacher Credential Program.
The College of Education’s Mission Statement is one that really appeals to me. I have always been a believer of social justice, diversity and educational equity. The reason why I strongly believe in and have faith in the Mission statement is because as a Latina, I have at times suffered from marginalization and oppression. I believe that it is about time that I personally make a difference and help transform our public education with the hopes of improving the quality of all of our lives.
